Many soldiers, especially in early years, in the American and West Indian colonies are often mercenaries hired to protect the interest of trade companies. Others, such as those of the Portuguese Tercios are sent by their sovereign to protect their nations overseas holdings. In either case, most are veterans of the many European wars and are fearless fighters.
